Recap
In the first game of 2025, Birtley Town fell to a 2-0 defeat to high-flying Boro Rangers.
Boro Rangers continued their impressive record over Birtley Town with a fifth successive victory over The Hoops. Up until this season, the two clubs had progressed at a similar rate during their recent Northern League journeys but Rangers have always enjoyed the better of the competitive fixtures against each other. Luke Carr and Jake Stafford made their debuts for the club while Alfie Gordon started in goal and the impressive Reece Harrison keeping his place at left-back.
The first opportunity of the game came to Birtley as James Proctor was awarded a free-kick on the edge of the area. Luke Carr stepped up but his effort was straight at Boro keeper Horner. The best chance of the opening stages came when a long ball from Alfie Gordon was helped on by Nick Marley. Scott Heslop bundled his way into the area but his effort was well saved by Horner.
Birtley enjoyed their best spell of the half when they won successive corners on the half-hour mark. The Hoops were piling on the pressure but Jack Elliott’s tame effort was again handled by Horner. The Hoops were potentially the better side in the opening period as Lancaster and Hedley managed to nullify the threat of Stuart Rose.
Boro Rangers started to threaten in the dying moments of the half, Lamb picked the ball up on the edge of the area and after dribbling round numerous defenders and feigning efforts at goal, eventually saw his effort saved by Gordon. The deadlock was cruelly broken in injury time. Callum Hickman superbly controlled a cushioned pass from Jack Guy before slotting the ball neatly into the bottom corner.

Rangers doubled their lead in the 54th minute. Jack Guy was allowed to travel from out wide and he jinked passed a defender before bending the ball into the top corner. The Hoops looked for a way back into the game and sent on Matty Ward and Kelvin Thear. It was Ward who had the first real opening of the second period for Birtley he couldn’t quite adjust his feet to get the ball under control following good work from Carr, Marley and Heslop.
Alfie Gordon denied a third Rangers goal with a neat save from Jack Guy’s firm effort. Nick Marley had a brilliant opportunity to then pull Birtley back into the game on 74 minutes but was unable to capitalise. Alfie Gordon then denied Stuart Rose his usual goal against The Hoops six minutes later.
Birtley were unable to create anything meaningful in the dying stages despite finding themselves with a number of openings. The game finished with a comfortable second half display from Rangers as they remained in the play-off positions and firmly in the title race. Birtley remained in 19th place and nine points above the drop zone. Fellow strugglers Seaham Red Star losing 5-0 to Whitley Bay and Whickham were defeated 4-2 by Shildon.
