Recap
Birtley Town crashed out of the Northern League Cup following a 3-1 defeat to high-flying Boro Rangers.
A late but brilliantly struck free kick from Callum Turnbull wasn’t enough to earn Birtley Town a place in the semi-finals of the Northern League Cup. Ben Turner scored after just six minutes as The Hoops defence looked to be suffering from a post-Wembley hangover. Owen Burns doubled the lead for Boro Rangers in the 27th minute with a good finish into the far corner.
HALF TIME | Birtley Town 0-2 Boro Rangers
Birtley were reduced to ten men on the hour mark as Owen Lancaster was shown a straight red card for what the referee interpreted to be a last man challenge. The video replays showing the Birtley man had made contact with the ball first.
Less than three minutes later – and in the same period of play – Birtley’s Jake Stafford and Boro’s James Field were also sent off in bizarre fashion for having words with each other. Both of Birtley’s red cards were appealed the following day with Stafford’s being rescinded. Callum Hickman secured a deserved third for Boro Rangers in the 77th minute with Birtley down to nine men and Boro with the extra player.
A positive moment of the evening for the club saw Birtley Town U18’s player Jack Hall make his senior debut, replacing Sam Hedley for the last quarter of an hour.
