Recap
Birtley Town welcome Holden CW to The Arrowmark hoping to find a first win in four games.
The Hoops welcome old foes Horden CW to DH3 on Tuesday. Games between Birtley and Horden have always been a close, physical battle between two sides who have followed a similar trajectory to Northern League Division One.
Last season, The Hoops completed a league double over Horden with Jack Honour, Scott Heslop and Callum Smith amongst the goals for Birtley in the home tie. Nick Marley scored the only goal in the return leg. In recent seasons though Horden have found Birtley a happy hunting ground having won their previous two visits including an FA Vase fixture where Jack Pounder scored twice. Birtley will need to improve their defensive record if they are to return to winning ways after a disappointing but deserved defeat to Benfield, FA Vase exit to Whickham AFC and draw at Northerallerton. The Hoops are boosted by the return of Sam Hedley and Owen Lancaster to the squad after both have missed the last three games.
As for Horden, the visitors are also without a win in three league games albeit their winless run has been a difficult set of fixtures against fellow play-off contenders. The Hoops will need to be aware of the threat posed by Pounder and Phil Angus. The game is Birtley’s last home game for three fixtures as trips to Newton Aycliffe, Penrith and Marske are on the horizon. Birtley will be hoping that home support will help them get back to winning ways. A win for Birtley would see them leapfrog above Horden however a win for the The Marras would likely push them into the play-off spots.
