Birtley rescued a point at the death on Saturday afternoon, in a six-goal thriller that saw the Hoops extend their unbeaten run to seven games. The game got off to a slow start in wet, muddy conditions, and it took until the 23rd minute for Birtley to break the deadlock through recent-signing Lewis Exley, who rose unmarked to head home Tom McIntyre’s corner.

Within five minutes, Jarrow hit-back through Liam Mulvain, who floated a lovely free-kick past Conor Grant and into the back of the net. Mulvain almost gave his side the lead shortly afterwards, as he headed an Abu Salim corner over the bar. In added time at the end of the first half, Mulvain and Salim combined again, with the latter firing the visitors ahead, giving Jarrow a narrow lead at the break.

Birtley made two chances at half-time with Andrew Clarkson and Josh Holland replacing Ricky Tanoh and Kevin Mirzakhaninan. Within 10 minutes they were forced into a third change, as Jack Honour left the field following a late challenge from Harry Simpson – the former Hoops man receiving a yellow card for his trouble.

Right on the hour mark, the hosts got themselves level. Andrew Brown – making his home debut – played an exquisite pass to Tom McIntyre, who slipped past one defender before being felled by another. The ref pointed to the spot, and Aidan Rutledge stepped up to dispatch his 36th goal of the season. The Hoops’ joy was to be short-lived, however, as Jarrow immediately went up the other end and restored their lead through Daniel Smith.

Birtley huffed and puffed for the final half hour, but chances were few and far between, with both Lewis Exley and substitute Frank Tutt failing to trouble Graeme Pickering in the Jarrow goal. But a late corner deep into injury time, gave Birtley one final throw of the dice, and defender Owen Lancaster duly stepped up and headed home to rescue his side a valuable point.

Manager Paul Bryson was disappointed with the first half. “I am pleased to get a point in the end but we got punished for probably our worst first-half performance of the season. I was very impressed with Jarrow, they played with a purpose, won first balls and second balls. Whilst we were poor, I thought Jarrow were good.

Second half, we made two substitutions as we needed to get a reaction from the players. The second period was much better and we played on the front foot. We got back into the game. Today we have created two massive sins, once we score to make it 2-2 we then concede a third within a minute. We conceded on the stroke of half-time to go in 2-1 down. It was really poor game management.”

“Once Jarrow went ahead at 3-2, we were still trying to probe and ask a few questions. we probably deserved our equaliser. we got punished for a really poor first half display, there were some positives from the second period but ultimately if we are scoring three goals we should be winning the game. This has happened on a few occasions now. We really need to address this, we are conceding far too many goals. To finish in the positions where we want to finish then this needs improving. Whilst we are pleased with the attacking play, we need to tighten up at the other end.”
