The Hoops concluded their league campaign with a comfortable 4-1 win over Ryton. The final home game of the season was watched by 202 supporters taking the total across the season to 4,433. The average attendance per game finished at 222 and is currently the highest in the division, a big increase from the 159 average from last season.

It was Ryton who took an early lead when Josh Skivington scored an absolute worldy after fourteen minutes to open the scoring and they looked very dangerous on the counter attack. Birtley looked to get back on level terms and Liam Wotherspoon thought he had scored just a minute later, however Ryton keeper Thomas Dawson pulled off a brilliant save to prevent a quick equaliser. Birtley were level on 30 minutes when Glen Hargrave prodded the ball home after a mini scramble in the RACA goalmouth. Birtley had another chance through Matty Ward three minutes later however Dawson was again equal to it.

Five minutes into the second half, Ward was the first to strike when he finished superbly to see Birtley take the lead for the first time in the game. The striker then turned provider for Birtley’s third goal, picking out substitute Callum Smith in the box who easily found the top corner. Wardy again had a hand to play in Birtley’s fourth goal when he was dragged down in the area. This allowed Smiggs the opportunity to score his second of the day from the penalty spot and put the Hoops 4-1 up. There was still time in the game for Glen Hargrave and Andrew Clarkson to have their own miss of the season competition as they both fired wide from close range.

Birtley concluded their league season by recording a record points total (80), most goals scored (130) and least goals conceded (55). The Hoops now head into the play-offs looking to make an extra bit of history with a first ever promotion to Northern League Division One the reward should we be successful.

Manager’s Corner

Brysa was thrilled to get a win before heading into the play-offs.” It was a real pleasing performance and result. We changed the formation and personnel.  We didn’t have Aidan or Joe Barwick, Conor was away and we rested Smiggs, Josh and Alex Francis from the starting XI. We got good minutes into Josh Holland, Wardy and Owen Lancaster. The pleasing thing was that we came out of the last game with a good win but also no injuries or suspensions. We started the game alright. We dominated the ball but Ryton looked very dangerous on the counter attack. We went 1-0 down but responded well with Glen getting a headed goal to take us in level at the break.”

“During the interval, we asked the lads to make better decisions in the final third and to be fair they did that in the second half. Smiggs came on and scored two. Alex also came on which made us stronger. The 2nd half was a really pleasing way to end the season. It gives us a lot of confidence going into the play-off games. It looks like we will play either Boro Rangers or Horden. We go into the game with confidence and a clean bill of health. It will be one of the biggest games in the clubs history. We will be ready and looking forward to it. It was a good and pleasing performance.”
