Birtley booked their place in the next round of The FA Vase on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Sunderland West End.
Jack Robson made his full debut and replaced the suspended Kyle Wharton. In the early stages Birtley looked the more threatening side. The Hoops thought they had opened the scoring on 17 minutes but Stephen Hall was judged to be offside. This seemed to kick West End into gear and Alfie Gordon produced a wonderful save to prevent Luke McCabe from opening the scoring. The visitors remained in the driving seat and only the crossbar denied Jack Devlin from chipping Gordon. Birtley broke the deadlock on 24 minutes when Spoony played a neat through ball to Hall who buried his first of the season.
The opening goal settled Birtley and it Sunderland West End had their goalkeeper Charlton to thank after he made a string of saves to deny James Proctor, Alex Francis and Jack Robson from doubling the lead. On the 47th minute Callum Smith was brought down just outside of the box and the referee deemed Matty Taylor to be the last man. He received a red card with Birtley taking a one goal lead into the break.

The second half eventually kicked off after the net received some medical attention. Birtley doubled their lead with Callum Turnbull delivering to Glen Hargrave, his header cannoned back off the post but Birtley recycled the ball and Jack Robson found James Proctor who slotted home. Luke Charlton again denied Alex Francis from extending the Birtley lead. The Hoops brought on Josh Strassheim and Andrew Clarkson for their first appearances of the season. The second period was mostly comfortable for the hosts with Sunderland West End showing a battling display with only 10 men.

Player of the Match – Jack Robson
Paul Bryson was pleased to progress into the next round. “The main thing from today is that we wanted to get into the next round. It wasn’t our greatest performance but we wanted to make sure we were in the draw. We play Whickham away in the next round, that will be a really tough game. I have watched Sunderland West End a few times this season. They had a game plan to try and drop off, to try and frustrate us. To be fair this worked for large periods, it forced us to go longer and make the wrong decisions. I thought Jack Robson was our main threat, he was really positive and trying to make things happen. The first goal was a really good goal. We managed to play through the lines and there was good work from Jack and Spoony. I was delighted that Stephen Hall got his first of the season. He has worked so hard for us so I was really pleased to see him on the scoresheet.
West had a man sent off just before half-time, I thought it was a little harsh. We scored early in the second half through Proc. He thoroughly deserved his goal. He was fantastic, he was making things happen and showed loads of energy. We were really pleased to get a clean sheet, Jack Robson received the player of the match award on his debut and Proc was outstanding. We look forward to Tuesday.”
