The Hoops were in a rampant mood as they won 7-0 against Willington AFC. Goals from Aidan Rutledge, Glen Hargrave and Brandon Turnbull secured a sixth consecutive win for Birtley who made one change to the team that beat Redcar Town with Joe Barwick replacing the injured Josh Holland.

It took the hosts just four minutes to break the deadlock with a superb strike from Glen Hargrave. The first half was a physical affair and Birtley had to show a different side to their game. Birtley doubled their lead in the 25th minute, Alex Francis’ effort looking to hit the bottom corner but was parried by the keeper into the path of Aidan Rutledge who was on hand to poke the ball home. This ensured Rutledge has now scored in seven consecutive games. Neither Hargrave or Rutledge were finished just yet though. On 39 minutes, it was Hargrave again who unleashed a furious drive that cannoned off the bar. The two then combined for number three with Rutledge meeting the end of a brilliant Hargrave cross to score with a diving header from six yards.

The visitors started the second half well. Conor Grant did well to deny Williamson and Callum Turnbull produced a miraculous clearance to keep the Birtley clean sheet record going and although the second half lost abit of momentum with numerous injuries for Willington. The visitors had already seen an injury to their goalkeeper in the warm up and by 68 minutes had a further three injuries. Birtley extended their lead in the 70th minute through Glen Hargrave who did superbly to lob the onrushing goalkeeper but the resulting collision resulted in a nasty looking injury for the Birtley number 11 and he was immediately replaced. A beautiful move on 89 minutes saw Ben Garrity link up with Rutledge. A superb flick allowed Brandon Turnbull through on goal and he fired home to open up his account for The Hoops.

Ten minutes injury time was announced by the referee, much to the dismay of the away bench and this allowed Birtley time to add two more. In the 92nd minute, Rutledge cut inside from the left and unleashed a low drive to the bottom right-hand corner. Three minutes later, Rutledge had his 4th of the evening with a similar goal but this time smashing the ball into the far left of the goal.

Paul Foster was once again delighted with the performance. “Another very good performance last night. The first 20 minutes was not at the level we have been playing at. We settled down after the goal from Glen went in, this allowed us to play some really good stuff and everything Aidan touches at the minute seems to be going in, long may that continue.”

“Whilst the forward line and midfield seem to be taking all the plaudits at present our back five have been fantastic in keeping four clean sheets off the bounce against very good sides. As long as we keep clean sheets we will always create chances but they have been excellent in limiting good sides to very few chances.”

Foss was again thrilled with the attendance and support for The Hoops. “Another crowd approaching the 300 mark again. On a Tuesday night this is absolutely fantastic and the lads are really appreciative of all the support you are giving them, it’s something that has been mentioned quite a bit within the dressing room.”

Next up for Birtley is an exciting FA Vase tie against high-flying Ilkley Town on Saturday at The Arrowmark Home Improvements Stadium. Kick off is 3pm.

Attendance – 283. Thank you for your amazing support. A minutes silence was held for former Willington AFC volunteer Steve Hickman who has sadly passed away. Our thoughts are with his friends and family

Birtley Town pay their respects to Willington volunteer Steve Hickman.

Man of the Match – Aidan Rutledge.
