Birtley suffered a bruising 6-0 defeat in their first ever fixture at Phoenix Park

Stuart Rose scored four goals as Rangers capitalised on a series of Birtley errors to inflict our biggest defeat of the season. Birtley started brightly and maintained the majority of possession in the opening period without creating any chances. The bright start was undone on just 15 minutes when Callum Hickman opened the scoring. The lead was doubled inside two minutes when Harry Thompson capitalised on another error from Birtley. Stuart Rose furthered the Birtley misery when he got his first of the afternoon just before half-time.

HALF TIME | Boro Rangers 3 – 0 Birtley Town

The second period belonged to Rose as he scored his second on 67 minutes before completing his hat-trick shortly after. Rangers were ruthless throughout the game and continually regained possession in the Birtley half. Boro used their experience and attacking endeavour by producing a series of counter attacks that were rounded off with excellent finishing. Birtley’s miserable afternoon was complete when Rose scored his 4th and Boro’s 6th in the dying stages.

Manager’s Corner

Paul Bryson: “It was a tough one to take. We made one change going into the game as Wardy was unwell and Glen returned to the starting line-up. We have went from our best performance of the season against Whickham to our worst performance of the season. The game started off and Boro dropped off, they allowed us to have the majority of the possession. We didn’t really create anything in the early stages. We made a mistake and went 1-0 down, quickly followed be a second goal. We made another mistake to make it 3-0. It was a game of real mistakes from our part. We made a number of individual errors that we couldn’t legislate for. We kept it the same at half-time.”

“The second half was much of the same. We made another mistake for 4-0 when we tried to let the ball run out. Boro went on to convincingly beat us 6-0. It’s a real shame we havent got a game on Saturday as the first thing you want to do after a big defeat is get back out on the pitch again. We will have to stick together. Myself and Foss believe in the lads, hopefully this is a one off. I hope it doesn’t tarnish the good start we have made. Up until Saturday we have been really good. We have a good set of lads who are wanting to pull in the right direction.

Fair play to Boro Rangers, they are an effective team. They were effective in the second division last year and they will be again this year. I expect them to finish in the top 8 and possibly higher. The 3G pitch made us change the tactics a little bit, we played a little bit more than we usually do. We made poor decisions and it cost us. Fair play to Boro Rangers.

We now need to focus on Seaham in two weeks time and we hope to have James Proctor back which will be a big boost.”
