Recap

Ex gon’ give it to ya

The Hoops returned to league action on a chilly afternoon against Crook Town at The Sir Tom Cowie Millfield. Crook came out on top this time round thanks to a top draw 49th minute volley from skipper Daniel Milton in a game where chances were hard to come by in the first half as both teams defended well.

There were concerns inside the first five minutes from the Birtley bench though as captain Alex Francis appeared to clatter head first into the post, thankfully he was ok and fine to continue. The first chance of the game came to Francis a few minutes later from a flick on from Smiggs following a Spoony freekick but the attempt was claimed comfortably by Alex Curran in the Crook net. Birtley created a couple more chances but we weren’t able to find our cutting edge. Zack Bewley had a chance in the 21st minute to put Crook ahead after a spilled cross but his attempt was cleared off the line. The first half continued much the same way with attacks being snuffed out by both sides and no other clear cut chances being made.

HALF TIME | Crook Town 0 – 0 Birtley Town

Both teams returned to the pitch both itching to break the deadlock. The first chance fell to the Hoops again with Smiggs breaking through the Crook backline and pulling his shot inches wide of Curran’s right post. This was a warning sign for Crook, and they responded a few minutes later. Reece Havelock-Brown on a counter attack played in Moody who was faced up against Callum Turnbull. CT is able to get the better of Moody twice and third time lucky for Moody he wins a corner. Once the ball came in it was headed back into the centre of the box and Daniel Milton found himself free on the penalty spot to volley home in the top corner past Alfie Gordon who could do nothing to prevent the goal. From this point on the Hoops started applying more pressure on the Crook backline but they stood firm and looked threatening on the counter attack. On another day they could have bagged a few if not for the stalwart efforts of the Birtley Defence.

The rest of the match continued in a similar fashion and Crook held on to their lead fairly confidentially.

Paul Bryson’s thoughts following the match “We’re disappointed not to come away with something from the game. We may not have done enough to be a clear winner, but we certainly didn’t deserve to lose the game. We made one change to bring Owen Lancaster back in to restore the usual back three, replacing young Josh Strassheim.

We started the game well and contained Crook in the first half. Scott Heslop had a great chance early on which he put wide, and we had another great chance when Ben Pentland put it back in the box. Heslop is stretching and gets a head to it but the touch takes it away from Stephen hall running in behind him who would have had a free header on goal.

At half time we were pleased with the performance and wanted the lads to continue on the front foot, but also to be prepared for Crook to have a good spell themselves. Our best passage of play came early in the second half when Smiggs broke through but he put his shot just wide. Shortly after we conceded from the 2nd phase of a corner with a quality volley from the edge of the box. Ultimately this won the game for Crook. It’s fine margins, we could have been one up minutes earlier but instead we were one down. This gave Crook a boost and then they went on to have a good 20 minute spell.

We really put the pressure on in the last 10 minutes and Matthew Ward had a great chance to equalise but fired over from close range. There will be other times in the season where a similar performance would give you at least a point, if not all three. There were some real positives in the game to take away, particularly the defence, they were excellent.

We go again on Tuesday against Whitley Bay looking to pick up the three points.”
