Birtley secured another crucial three points at the weekend when goals from usual suspects Glen Hargrave and Aidan Rutledge were enough to secure the double over Easington.

The game got off to an even start as the wind whipped in from the North Durham coastline, with chances few and far between. Tom Scothern was the first to come close, firing a free-kick into the wall after a foul on Glen Hargrave. On the half-hour mark, Birtley survived a considerable threat, with Conor Grant booked for hauling down an opposing attacker – the covering defender sparing the Hoops stopper an early bath. Within two minutes, the keeper’s blushes were spared once again as Owen Lancaster stepped in to sweep up a mis-hit clearance.

The deadlock was broken on 34 minutes following a foul by
Shaun Pickford on Birtley’s Callum Smith. The Colliers man joined Grant in the book, and was then forced to watch as Hargrave smashed the resulting free kick into the back of the net. It was a delightful finish from Hargrave who used the wind to help the ball fly into the top right hand corner. Easington emerged into the second half with the wind at their backs and a fire in their bellies, and began to bombard the Birtley goal. Conor Grant was in sensational form as he twice denied Easington’s Nathan O’Neill to protect his side’s slender lead. On the 75th minute, substitute Gary Shaw fired in a back-post header, which was again well saved by Grant.

In the 78th minute, Birtley finally got a much-needed cushion, as Aidan Rutledge got on the end of a free-kick to put the Hoops two goals ahead after a superb Jack Honour delivery.

Clarky holds the ball up in the corner late on.

Five minutes later, another Colliers sub Dylan Elliott came close, managing to shrug off his marker before firing straight at Grant. Further relief for Birtley came in the 86th minute, as Brad Foster was dispatched for a second yellow, after a shove on Hoops’ skipper Jack Honour. That proved to be the last action of the game, and Birtley were able to pat themselves on the back for a professional job done in difficult conditions.

Attendance – 83 including around 25 travelling Birtley fans.

Player of the match – Conor Grant. The Birtley stopper made a string of fine saves while the score was still 1-0.
