Birtley fell to their first defeat in seven games as The Hoops recent excellent form ended with a disappointing defeat away at Esh. It was a day to forget for Birtley as two goals from Joe Bates gave Esh Winning their first home win over Birtley in 4 years.

It took Esh Winning just 14 minutes to open the scoring with Joe Bates firing a low deflected shot beyond Isaac Robinson. Bates could have doubled the hosts lead on 32 minutes when he fired wide after being played through on goal.

The Hoops made changes at the interval with the hope of offering an improved performance in the second half. Josh Holland was the provider as his long throw-in was glanced on by substitute Owen Lancaster to Aidan Rutledge to level the scores after 49 minutes.

Birtley, however, were level for just eight minutes when Bates got his second of the game. He capitalised on a hesitant Birtley defence after a number of players had stopped, it seemed that players had been expecting a foul to be awarded on Birtley midfielder Lewis Orrell however the referee waved away the protests and Bates scored his second of the game.

It was Esh Winning who looked the most likely to extend their lead and when Alex Francis injured his ankle on 82 minutes it meant Birtley had to play the remainder of the game with 10 men having made all of their alloted changes. The injury looked a serious one and with the play-offs on the horizon it is a major concern for The Hoops.

There can be no arguments about the final result as Birtley must now look to bounce back in their final league game of the season against Ryton & Crawcrook Albion before heading into the play-offs.

The result almost certainly leaves Birtley destined to finish in 5th place meaning they will face an away tie at whoever finishes in 2nd place in the play-off semi final.

Birtley Town supporters watch on as their team falls to a 2-1 defeat.

Manager’s Corner

Paul Bryson: “I did not see that performance coming after the recent form we had been in. We looked leggy, tired and if I am honest we looked uninterested.

The warm-up wasn’t great as Conor got injured so we had to make a change there with Isaac Robinson coming in. We started the game poorly. We never really got going and we told them that no one would lie down for them. I thought one was waiting for the next player to do it and that player was waiting for someone else.

Overall it was an awful performance. We conceded a bad goal and went in 1-0 down. We made changes and changed the formation. We started the second period really well with another Aidan goal. We thought we would kick on at that point, but we didn’t. We lacked ideas in the final third and the quality wasn’t good enough. Esh Winning scored the winning goal and deserved their win.

We were on the end of another diabolical decision. It was a stonewall foul on Lewis Orrell and it was that obvious all of our lads stopped, that is a cardinal sin. That allowed their lad to go straight through and score.

We put another two subs on to try and get something from the game but then Alex Francis pulled up with a bad ankle injury, we finished the game with 10 men and it was comfortable for Esh. Hopefully Alex’s injury is not as bad as first feared.”
