Birtley continued their surge towards the play-offs with a 2-0 victory over Northallerton on Wednesday evening.

Goals from Matthew Ward and James Proctor secured a third successive victory for Birtley as they continue their push for a top five finish. Birtley made just one change to the starting eleven with Liam Wetherspoon starting in midfield. The game started with neither side creating any meaningful chances despite Birtley having the majority of possession. The hosts showed resolute defending in the opening periods and prevented Birtley from creating any real chances. Lewis Exley finally found space on 29 minutes and delivered a curling cross that found James Proctor. Proctor was able to control on the penalty spot before volleying home the opening goal.

Exley delivered another superb cross just moments later but Ally keeper Jack Norton was able to deny Josh Strasshiem. Birtley did double their lead on 39 minutes as Proctor found Matthew Ward on the edge of the area. Ward was able to cut inside and curl home a beautiful effort for his 16th goal of the season.

Northallerton were much improved in the second period and Alfie Gordon made a string of early saves to keep Birtley’s lead in tact. Gordon first denied Jack Raper from long range, manging to push a low effort out for a corner. The Birtley stopped was then quick off his line to prevent Ali Banks from pulling a goal back. Northallerton dominated the second period however a rare Birtley attack resulted in James Proctor slotting home from close range but he was rightly judged to have been in an offside position. The remainder of the game saw neither side produce any real chances, the main highlight coming from Stephen Hall who managed to keep the ball in the Northallerton corner for what seemed an eternity.

The win jumped Birtley above Heaton Stannington and West Auckland, Birtley now sitting in 3rd place although Heaton have a game in hand.

Manager’s Corner

Paul Foster: “Three points is what we needed and they were duly collected. We didn’t hit the heights from Saturday but our quality in the first half was enough to see us go 2-0 up through Proc and Wardy. We had to defend well and see the game out in the second half, they applied a bit more pressure but Alfie was there when needed and produced a couple of great saves in key moments. If we had taken our chances in the first half then it could have been a lot more comfortable but at the end of the day it’s the points that matter.”
