Recap

Birtley took all three points on Tuesday night, against a Sunderland West End side far stronger than their league position would suggest.

West have endured a difficult start to the season, and came into the fixture on the back of six straight league defeats, so it must’ve felt like dé jà vu for the beleaguered Wearsiders when Hoops hotshot Aidan Rutledge rounded Neal Bussey after only five minutes to slot home his 35th goal in all competitions. It was a cool finish from the Birtley number 9, after a decent flick on by strike partner Glen Hargrave. Birtley looked like they would build on their early lead when Jack Honour skimmed the cross bar soon after.

Despite the early setback, West were on the front foot and came close to an equaliser after ten minutes, when both Brad Oliver and Lewis Charlton saw their efforts blocked during the same phase of play. However, it was Birtley who got the break on 22 minutes when Rutledge stepped up to fire home his second from the penalty spot, after he was tripped in the box. The referee pointed to the spot despite loud protests from West End.

The non-stop early action seemed to peter out at that point, with the sides cancelling each other out and the play becoming increasingly scrappy. West began the second half well and remained on top until the hour mark when Rutledge burst through and looked certain to complete his hat-trick, only to see his shot deflected over the bar by some last-ditch defending. Rutledge had a further opportunity when he cut inside from the left but saw his bending shot well saved from the Sunderland keeper.

With ten minutes remaining, Alex Francis rose unmarked at the near post to head home from a Lewis Exley set piece, and ease the pressure on his side. There was a further claim for a second Birtley penalty when Hargrave was brought down in the area however the referee waved away the protests.  As the game entered injury team, West End substitute Samuel Peat pulled one back for the hosts, beating Conor Grant from a tight angle, but it proved too little too late and Birtley came away with another valuable victory.

Manager Paul Bryson was delighted with another three points away from home and reflect on the first half of the season.

“Another really good performance and result for us. It’s been really pleasing to take 10 points from a possible 12 with our last 4 games all away from home. I can’t believe that we have played half the season in three months and we have a further six months to play the next half. It’s beyond me and it’s been a huge ask. Fair play to the lads for dealing with it as it has been relentless. The lads have dealt with it professionally.”

“I thought Sunderland West End played well. It was great to see Kevin come in for his debut alongside Andy Brown who is now back in the club. We have freshened things up at the right time with Tom McIntyre, Frank Tutt and the other new additions. We have needed the full squad. It has been a real positive start. Aidan again got another couple of goals, Alex also scored from a set play. Our delivery from set pieces has been good. It’s a little bit disappointing not to see the game out with a clean sheet but let’s go into Saturday with confidence. We look forward to welcoming Jarrow and returning to playing at home.”
