Birtley hit the A19 for the first time in a while, as they head to Teesside on Saturday afternoon to face Thornaby in Northern League Division One.

The game comes hot on the heels of a resilient performance at Whitley Bay last time out, where a spirited defensive display secured a share of the points after goals from Nick Marley and Liam Thear had given the Hoops the lead. The result saw them inch a point ahead of Thornaby, who lost 2-1 at home to Kendal Town.
The two sides last met at Birtley’s Arrowmark Improvements Stadium back in July, where goals from Ryan Wright and Dale Milburn cancelled out Matty Ward’s opener to give the Teessiders an opening day victory.
Birtley will welcome back striker Scott Heslop on Saturday, who returns from a short spell at Bishop Auckland, alongside leading scorer James Proctor, who was suspended last weekend. Alex ‘Ban’ walker will be available for selection following his transfer from Thornaby, while Owen Lancaster also returns to the squad.
The Hoops will be hoping for a first win at Thornaby since 2010. The Hoops have lost five consecutive games on Teesside and will be hoping for a change in fortunes at the weekend.
With it being an international break, it’d be great to see a good following head to Teesside as we look to move up the league.
