Birtley Town have completed the signing of prolific local striker Scott Heslop from Ashington AFC.

Scott Heslop has joined The Hoops from Ashington after helping the Colliers secure promotion last season. Heslop has been promoted 3 times from the Northern league with Dunston UTS, Consett and Ashington. He started that journey at Dunston scoring 17 goals in his opening season before gaining promotion in the 2018/9 campaign. Scott adapted well to the Northern Premier League, winning three individual club awards the following season. Joining Consett in December 2021 he made an immediate impact, scoring twice in a 3-2 win at Seaham Red Star. He then scored the first goal in the play-off at Histon which earned the club promotion to the Northern Premier League for the first time. He finished that season with eight goals from 17 appearances. After Consett he moved onto West Auckland before Ian Skinner signed him as part of his promotion push at Ashington. His goals for the Colliers helped secure a third promotion from the Northern League for Heslop. Scott is no stranger to Birtley having netted both of Ashington’s goals in a pre-season friendly at the Arrowmark this summer.

Manager Paul Foster is delighted to sign Helsop. “We are delighted to welcome Scott into the squad from Ashington and we are over the moon to have a proven goalscorer of his calibre at Birtley. Since Aidan moved to Gateshead, we knew this was an area of the pitch we had to strengthen. The lads have started the season well and scored plenty of goals. By adding Scott to the squad it really does give us an extra dimension. His movement and goals at this level speaks for themselves. He has scored goals wherever he has been and has a proven record at a higher level, so we really are delighted to be bringing him in.”

“He’s a local lad who we have tried to sign a couple of times before but the timing just wasn’t right. When we found out he was available it really was a no brainer. We said we would only sign players who would improve us as a side, helping us move forward and Scott will certainly do this. I would like to thank Ian Skinner at Ashington for allowing us to get this done so quickly and we look forward to welcoming him into the squad on Saturday.”

Heslop will go straight into the squad to face Tow Law on Saturday
