Alex started his career as a youngster at Newcastle United’s Academy and has played for some well established clubs in the past including Gateshead, Spennymoor Town and Dunston UTS with further spells coming at Northern League sides West Auckland, Bishop Auckland and Whickham. He was part of the successful promotion side with Consett AFC last season and has worked closely with Paul Bryson before.

Signing in the summer of 2023 Alex was key point of the promotion winning side making 37 appearances alongside scoring 12 goals. He scored in both penalty shoot-outs in the play-off finals. Alex took over the captain’s armband from Jack Honour in September 2023. Francis was a commanding and leading figure for the club as Birtley finished 4th in Division One. A frustrating and lengthy knee injury ruled Alex out of the 24/25 season but all Birtley fans will have everything crossed that Alex can be back to his best for the new season.
