Midfielder Liam Wotherspoon has departed the club in favour of a return to former club Blyth Town. Spoony joined The Hoops part way through our promotion season following a pivotal comeback against Blyth in a thrilling game, and went on to play a big part in the final third of the season.

He notched his first two assists on his debut in an emphatic win at Willington, this was the beginning of an exciting partnership with Aidan Rutledge, with the pair combining multiple times during the campaign. The most notable occasion was a classic whipped corner taken in the play off final that met Aidan’s head, taking us to penalties and on to promotion.

Liam started both games in the play-offs, registering an assist in both, a goal in the final and he was man of the match in the semi final against Horden.

Wotherspoon continued his fine form in this past season and was a mainstay in the starting XI. He ended his time with The Hoops having registered 42 appearances, 9 goals and 14 assists.

On Liam’s departure manager Reece Chapman commented “Spoony has been a big player for us over the last season and a bit. Having joined for the final games of our promotion season, he had a major influence in the final run in, and in both play-offs, scoring in both penalty shoot-outs as well. He helped to create memories that will last a lifetime at the club.

Last season he continued to play an important part in our midfield and his set piece quality helped secure numerous points. Overall it’s disappointing that Spoony has moved on. He’s a player I’ve always enjoyed working with, he’s been a good part of the dressing room and is as honest as they come. As with Glen, we wish him all the best as his new side and hope to see him down the Arrowmark again.”

We also asked for a bit on insight into next season when we caught up with Chapman “Almost everyone else has signed back up with the club from last season. We’ve also gained Dinza and Jack, and we have a handful of new faces in training that we are keeping an eye on and they have impressed so far. We’ve also got another couple coming along this week who we’ve approached. I think within the next week we’ll have some more exciting signings to announce.”
